How to Get Healthy Skin in Cooler Months
The weather will always affect your skin; from the scorching heat in the summer to the unbearable dryness in the winter. During the cooler months, your skin will respond in its own way to the lower temperatures and dry air. While it is important to be aware of how the weather affects your skin, it is equally important to buy skincare products based on your skin concerns, not simply on the weather outside.
Tips for Healthier, Glowing Skin in the Winter Months
For some of us, a rosy glow comes naturally in the winter and there is no need for special changes to our daily skincare routine. For others; however, winter can bring on dramatic changes. One thing you may notice is that your skin responds differently indoors than it does outdoors. This is because furnace or baseboard heating in your home can often dry out the air, and in turn, cause dryer skin. Luckily, there are things you can do to combat those winter skin woes, including:
Add a Deep Moisturizer to the Mix – If you do not have a deep moisturizer that you use at least once a day, you may want to add one into your routine for the winter months. Only use this if you notice your skin is drying or wrinkles are more pronounced in the winter. Ointment-like moisturizers are best because they form a protective layer on the skin that helps you retain necessary moisture.
Do Not Skip Sunscreen – You may think that because it is cold outside, you do not need sunscreen, but this is not true. Winter sun and the glare from the snow can damage your skin just as much in the winter as it can in the summer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily before going outside, and reapply if you are outside for a while.
Use a Humidifier Inside – Because the air can be so dry inside, it is important to replenish the humidity in your home by using a humidifier. These devices add moisture to the air and will prevent your hair and skin from drying out.
Change Your Cleanser – The cleanser you use in the summer may not be the same in the winter. If you have been using a foaming or water-soluble cleanser in the summer and now notice that your skin is dry, switch to a lotion or cream-based cleanser instead.
Use a Rich Toner – Alcohol-based toners will dry out your skin. Instead, switch to a lotion-type toner that soothes and moisturizes the skin after cleansing.
Try a Serum – You may need to add a serum that is loaded with hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and moisturizers at night. This will add an extra layer of protection and help repair dryness as you sleep.
Try a Hydrating Facial – To revitalize and hydrate the skin during the harsh winter months, consider getting a facial. The Medi-Spa Clinic at Canadian Beauty College offers facials for every type of skin concern, including age, acne and dryness.
