How often should you colour your hair?

Whether you’re doing it by yourself or having it done by a trained professional, colouring your hair is a fun way to revitalize your look and keep you feeling good. But if you want to keep your hair vibrant and bright, how often do you need to colour it? At Canadian Beauty College, we’re committed to educating our students about the ins and outs of hairstyling, hair colouring and makeup artistry at our school in Mississauga or Vaughan, Ontario. Let our team of experts give you a few tips on how often you should colour your hair.

Why do you want to re-colour your hair?

There are a multitude of reasons why you might want to re-colour your hair. As we said before, maybe you’re simply looking for a new look to keep you feeling fresh and stylish. For many people, however, hair colour is far more than a simple fashion statement. When you start getting on in years, your hair colour is one of the first things to go. If you want to keep a young look, it’s important to consistently dye your hair to keep yourself from going gray. Because you need to do it so often, you have to know exactly how often you can re-colour while still keeping your hair healthy. Hair dyes are full of chemicals that can be damaging when overused, so be sure to keep with the instructions and don’t overdo it. Even if you simply want to correct a monumental mistake that was made in a previous hairstyling tragedy, you need to respect these guidelines or risk doing serious, irreversible damage to your hair.

How long should you wait between sessions?

Any chemical treatment applied to your hair will cause damage to some extent. If you don’t colour your hair very often, the absolute least amount of time you should wait before having it redone is four weeks. This will give your hair time to recover before taking another chemical beating. If you do it more frequently (like when trying to maintain a specific colour), we recommend you wait six to seven weeks before doing it again. The longer you wait, the less likely you’ll be to cause any permanent damage to your hair.
