How to Treat and Minimize Scars

Scars can be a source of insecurity for many people. Depending on their location, severity, and formation, they can be difficult to hide and may draw unwanted attention or questions. If you are hoping to treat a new cut that will turn into a nasty scar, or want to fade the appearance of an existing mark on your skin, read on to learn some industry tips.

Tips to Minimize the Appearance of Scars

Looking for ways to heal faster or minimize the appearance of older scars? Try the following methods:

Healing Helps – Speed up healing time and reduce your risk of scarring at all by taking good care of your cuts and wounds. Allow the area to breathe and avoid using heavy creams or gels unless there is a risk of infection, making antibiotic ointment necessary. Avoid getting the wound wet if possible, and take care not to irritate the area by using harsh cleansers or over-washing.

Avoid Direct Sunlight – Keep fresh wounds out of direct sunlight and apply sunscreen of at least SPF25 to protect existing scars from becoming discoloured or increasingly sensitive. Sun exposure can increase healing time and make old scars more noticeable.

Don’t Pick – While it may be tempting, allow wounds to heal without disruption. Don’t pick at scabs or dry skin as cuts heal over.

Use a Silicone-Based Scar Treatment – Luckily there are gels and serums available that include antioxidants to help heal existing scars. The sooner you start treatment, the better the results. You should apply the treatment once or twice a day for two months to make scars less noticeable.

Use Sheets for Raised Scars – You can flatten the appearance of raised scars over time using similar silicone-based scar treatments. Silicone gel sheets are recommended, which can be applied for 12-24 hour periods and used for at least three months to see results.

Get Laser Treatments – If you have indented scars, speak with your dermatologist to determine the best course of action. Laser treatments performed by a professional in-office can improve their appearance. In severe cases, fat grafting or surgery may be deemed appropriate.

If you are concerned about a new wound, cut or scrape, or have a stubborn scar that just won’t fade, consider making an appointment with a skin care expert. Canadian Beauty College is one of Ontario’s leading esthetician schools and has skin care experts who can provide appropriate scar treatment and healing advice to keep you looking your best.
